Balm Bench

Ingredient profile

Hemisqualane

Overview

Hemisqualane is a lightweight oil-based ingredient that helps beard oils spread easily and feel less greasy. It also works in balms, serums, and the oil-based portion of creams.

The tradeoff is how long the soft feel lasts. Using too much can make the conditioned finish fade quickly, so pair it with slower-absorbing oils when the product needs more lasting cushion.

Technical details

Scientific name
C13-15 alkane

Hemisqualane is a very thin emollient—an ingredient that adds softness and glide. Its ingredient-list name is usually C13-15 alkane. It works in water-free oils and balms and in the oil-based portion of creams.

In beard oils, it can reduce a heavy or greasy feel without relying only on fractionated coconut oil or jojoba. In creams, it makes the oil portion spread more easily. Because it spreads and absorbs quickly, using too much can make the conditioned feel fade sooner.

Sourcing

Choose cosmetic-grade hemisqualane labeled C13-15 alkane, and check the supplier's source, thickness specification, amount guidance, and storage instructions.
